A

Ab - Egyptian name for the heart.

Abracadabra - A word from the Jewish mystical tradition of Qabala. Its root is the name of the Gnostic deity Abraxas, meaning "hurt me not". It is said to possess magickal powers, especially of protection from illness.

Adonis - a peagan god was worshipped in unspoken mystery religion. Followers were women. The Festival of Adonis was celebrated by women at midsummer by sowing fennel and lettuce, and grains of wheat and barley. The plants sprang up soon, and withered quickly, and women mourned for the untimely death of the vegetation god. Adonis was known for his extreme beauty.

Agate Rock - with properties to Energize and Strengthen

Aigyptos - Greek word for Egypt.

Air - One of the 4 elements. Associated with Knowledge. A wonderous element that allows life and music on this world. Air is represented by various objects such as an Athame.

Airmid - Celtic Goddess of healing, midicine, and spring. Brings the dead back to life.

Akasha - The fifth element of magick and the occult, this is the spiritual ether, often called the "Otherworld".

Aker - ancient Egyptian god in the form of a lion. It guarded the passage of the god Ra on his solar bark. Aker, guarded both the beginning and the end of the day.

Akh - The form in which the deceased exists in the afterlife; unchangeable and immortal. The soul.

Altar - Level place for practicing rituals and magick.

Alignment - Synchronization of mental and spiritual vibrations with a god, goddess, or astronomical body.

Amber Rock - -rids Depression, Lifts the Spirit

Amulet - An object with magickal properties. Another term for it is talisman.

American Wicca - Alive and well and growing.

Amaethon - Welsh Celtic God of husbandry, agriculture, and luck.

Amethyst Rock - -heightens psychic ability, inner calm, very helpful in Meditation.

Amethystine Agate - stimulates, brings about change.

Amenta - "The Underworld." Originally the place where the sun set, this name was later applied to the West Bank of the Nile where the Egyptians built their tombs.

Amon's Wives - High ranking women who serve in religious ceremony in Egyptian religion.

Ankh - A symbol of life according to Egyptian beliefs.

Anubis - Jackal-headed God of the Underworld

Anqet - Egyptian word for Water and Lust.

Aphrodite - Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty.

Apollo - Greek God of music. Also Roman God of sun, music, poetry, prophecy, and healing.

Apache Tear Rock - repels negativity, aids in grief, protection.

Aparche - The First Fruits offered to Demeter at Harvest Celebrations by the Ancients.

Aquertf - Egytian name for the land of the dead.

Arawn - Welsh Celtic god of the underworld, terror, revenge, and war.

Arianrhod - Welsh Celtic Goddess of Air, reincarnation, full moons, time, karma, and retribution.

Ares - Greek God of War.

Aradia - Daughter of the Goddess Diana, and a name for the Goddess used by Italian Witches or Strega, commonly used in many Wiccan traditions today.

Arcana- The minor and major arcana are the two halves of the Tarot deck.

Artemis - Greek Goddess of the night and the hunt. Protector of women.

Artio - Celtic Goddess of the wild.

Astral - Another dimension of reality. Also known as dreamtime. This name is from the Australian Aboriginal culture

Asperging - Sprinkling saltwater or other blessed water for cleansing a space. We believe saltwater from special places enhances magick.

Athame - A ritual knife that is symbolic of the element of air and can be used to invoke a scared circle.

Athena - Greek Goddess of wisdom, war, art, industry, justice, and skill.

Aura - The life force energy given off by all living organism.

Auger - Soothsayer or Diviner.

Aut - Egyptian name for funerary offerings to the deceased.

Animagus - A witch or wizard that can turn themselves into an animal shape, such as a fox, raven, or wolf. Pural is Animagi

Astrological signs - Signs of the Zodiac. There are 12 of them and are based on the position of Earth on its path around the Sun.

Astrology - Study of the heavens.

Aqua Aura rock - opens and cleanses the chakra.

Aquamarine rock - clears thinking, Purifying, Confidence, opens throat chakra.

Attune - To bring different psyches into harmony.

Aventurine rock - speeds healing, Promotes Creativity and Luck.

Azurite rock - helps to calm, aids in truth finding and acceptance.

Bacchus - Roman God of wine.

Bane - bad, evil or destructive.

Baneful Magick - black or evil magick. Not approved by the Rede.

Balefire - This is the word used to describe an open fire burning outside in the open air.

Baldr - Norse God of wisdom and radiance.

Balor - Celtic Goddess with a venomous eye. Good on the battlefield.

Bast - Well-known cat Goddess

Barley Moon - September Moon. This is the Moon that marks the God preparing for his rest in the Summerland. This is the time of the third harvest. Also referred to as the Harvest Moon.

Bellona - Roman Goddess wine.

Beltane - May Eve festival. One of the Ancient Celtic "Fire Festivals." on this night, cattle were driven between two bonfires to protect them from disease. Couples wishing for fertility would " jump the fires" on Beltane night. Also, the traditional Sabbath where the rule of the "Wheel of the Year" is returned to the Goddess. This Festival also marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Maiden to Mother.

Bind - to use Binding Magick to restrain someone or something. Example: " I bind you from causing harm: harm against others and harm against yourself." This does affect the subject's free will.

Blodeuwedd - Welsh Celtic Goddess of wisdom, moon mysteries, and initiations. One of the triple Goddesses of the Welsh pantheon.

Blessed Be - Phase that means "Be Blessed and Whole" or "The Blessings of the Gods be upon you" and used in ritual of the Five-fold Kiss.

Blood of the Moon - A woman's menstrual cycle. This is a very powerful time for women.

Blood Moon - October Moon. This is the Moon that marks the beginning of winter. This is the time that the people were bringing in the last of the harvests. It is the time for the hunt. Also called the Hunter's Moon.

Black Color -symbolizes wisdom, guidance, and protection.

Black Feathers - Used in spellwork, most potent are raven feathers. Least potent are chemically dyed feathers. In natural magic feathers are used in spells and ceremonies to promote change. Black feathers are used in spells for Protection, driving away, slow energy, grief, loss, and repelling energy .

Black Magic - Magic that does evil.

Blue Color - symbolizes: Good Fortune, Opening Blocked Communication, Wisdom, Protection, Spiritual Inspiration, Calm, Reassurance, Element of Water, Creativity, and Peace.

Book of Shadows - A wiccan's magickal text. A reference book compiled by the Wiccan. Only another Witch can see your Book of Shadows. Also, traditionally, it may never leave your hands or possession until death, when it should be destroyed, or (in some traditions) returned to the coven to be disposed of.

Bolline - Curved white handled knife for cutting on the physical plane things such as herbs.

Branwen - Celtic Goddess of love and beauty.

Broom- Used for many different purposes such as protection spells for the home or casting the magick circle.

Besom - A broom; most frequently used to sweep a circle clear of unwanted energy. Usually stored Bristles pointed up to prevent damage.

Botanomancy - The act of divining the future by the use of herbs.

Barite rock - excellent communication aid, especially with relationships.

Beryl rock - Psychic Awareness, another good relationship stone.

Black - symbolizes Protection, Repelling, Negativity, Binding, and Shapeshifting.

Black Onyx rock - repels negativity all around you.

Black Moon - When the moon shows no light. A time for not doing magick. A minority of the craft feel a Black Moon is a time to do harmful magick against foes.

Bloodstone - soothes the mind, relieves depression, Healing

Blue Laced Agate - Promotes feminine qualities, Gentleness, Peace

Botswana Agate - Attracts gifts and small pleasures, Mood lifting.

Blue Moon - The third full moon in a season when a season has 4 full moons rather than the traditional three (one per month).

Bragi - Norse God of poetry.

Brigit - was the goddess of the Sacred Flame of Kildare and one of the goddesses worshipped by the Celtic peoples, including the druids. She was the goddess of all things perceived to be of relatively high dimensions such as high-rising flames, highlands, hill-forts and upland areas; and of activities and states conceived as psychologically lofty and elevated, such as wisdom, excellence, perfection, high intelligence, poetic eloquence, craftsmanship (especially blacksmithy), healing ability, druidic knowledge and skill in warfare.

Brown - Influence Friendships, Special Favors, and Represents Soil.

Burning Times - a term used by some Witches for the period of Persecution in the Middle Ages and later. It is in fact a misnomer in some places, as Witches were only burned in Scotland, and on the continent of Europe. In England and the U.S., they were hanged or stoned.


C

Candles - Used to work magick or as an element of a spell. The color of the candle can be important. to the spell. Candles can be laced with scent and herbs. A lite candle can represent the element of fire.

Candlemas - Festival held on February 1. One of the 4 Celtic "Fire Festivals". Commemorates the changing of the Goddess from the Crone to the Maiden. Celebrates the first Signs of Spring. Also called "Imbolc" (the old Celtic name). This is the seasonal change where the first signs of spring and the return of the sun are noted, i.e. the first sprouting of leaves, the sprouting of the Crocus flowers etc. In other words, it is the festival commemorating the successful passing of winter and the beginning of the agricultural year. This Festival marks the transition point of the threefold Goddess energies from those of Crone to Maiden.

Cantrip - A spell cast by a witch. It is small, quick, and has minimal effects.

Camalus - Celtic God of the sky and war.

Carrier Oil - Used to dilute essential oil. Good carrier oil include almond, jojoba and vegetable oil.

Cardinal Points - North, South, East, and West, marked in the Georgian Tradition by candles of green, red, yellow, and blue, respectively. The Circle is drawn to connect these four points.

Cat/Lioness - The cat and lioness were particularly sacred in ancient Egypt, and there is a strong degree of sharing of aspect between the most common Goddesses - Bast and Sekhmet. Bast was originally portrayed as a lioness-headed Goddess, and it was only around 1,000 BC that she became commonly depicted as cat-headed. Bast is the protective mother, sensual and strong, fertile and even orgiastic. To the Egyptians Felines represented sexuality and sensuality, and it is perhaps in these roles that these Goddesses can give us the most, embodying as they do the power of the unrestricted feminine.

Cauldron - A pot which may be used for ritual purposes. Generally looks like the stereotypical black cast-iron pot. Can be used to burn things in.

Calendar Months - Used by the Ancient Greeks and Pegans who worshiped Demeter - our mother the earth. Gamelion - January, Anthesterion - February, Elaphebolion - March, Munychion - April, Thargelion - May, Skirophorion - June, Hekatombion - July, Metageitnion - August, Boedromion - September, Pyanepsion - October, Maimakterion - November, Poseidon - December

Celtic Tree Calendar - Based on the lunar year made up of 13 months. Each month is named for a type of tree. The year begins with Winter Solstice (Yule).

Celtic Wicca - Wiccan tradition based on Celtic or Druid beliefs.

Censer - Object used to hold and burn incense.

Ceres - Roman Goddess of corn (wheat).

Cerunnos - Celtic God of fertility, life, animals, wealth, and the underworld.

Cerridwen - Welsh Celtic Goddess of the Moon, grain, nature, poetry, music, luck, earth, death, fertility, regeneration, inspiration, art, science, astrology and the zodiac.

Cernunnos - The Celtic Stag God, God of Nature, Animals, wild places and fertility.

Ceremonial Blood - Organic elixir used in place of real blood. See Spell Library for recipe.

Chaplet - a garland or lei worn on the head and consisting of flowers leaves, herbs and plants all corresponding to a wish.

Chakras - Wheels of Light, the 7 primary energy centres of the body: navel, solar plexus, heart, throat, lower abdomen, forehead (third eye) and crown.

Chant - Sung or spoken incantation used to work a spell. Does not need to rhyme.

Cakes and Wine - At the end of a ritual food and drink are served to all. It need not be cake and wine but any food and beverage.

Calcite Rock - balancing, good for meditation.

Catharsis - The release of magickal energies at the height or climax of a ritual. Essentially the use of energy at the catharsis is the crux of the rite, determining whether its outcome will be successful or not.

Charm bag - a magickal pouch or bag usually made with magickal means (charged) for the appropriate desire. These can hold herbs, amulets, talismans, crystals power items such as power stones and runes, even your Tarot Deck.

Chalice - A ritual goblet

Carnelian rock - To focus, Helps in making decisions.

Charoite rock - Aids in conquering own fears.

Charge - To infuse an object or person with energy; also an oath or instruction.

Charge of the Goddess - A speech often used in Wiccan ritual that represent the words of the Goddess. Usually given by the High Priestess after drawing down the Moon.

Copper color - Passion, Money Goals, Professional Growth, Fertility in Business, and Career Maneuvers.

Cords - Tool for working Magick; String or Cord of a certain color for Cord Magick.

Chaote - A Chaos magician not actively in practice.

Chrysocolla Rock - Feminine qualities, clears thinking.

Citrine Rock - Attracts abundance, Prosperity.

Circe - famous Witch mentioned in the Odyssey.

Clear Quartz - Inner awareness, Concentration, Energy enhancer

Coral - for sea travel protection.

Cone Shells - Used in protective spell crafts.

Cone of Power - Energy that has been raised and focused for a specific purpose. This action may be solitary or in a coven.

Conches - Shell used in Love magick.

Corn Dolly - A figure made by plaiting wheat, similar to a poppet. It is symbolic of the fertility, grain, and harvest aspects of the Goddess.

Coven - A group of Witches who come together to practice magick and celebrate the Sabbaths.

Covenstead - regular meeting place for a Coven. Usually the home of the High Priestess or High Priest.

Coyote Energy - trickster energies. Also applies to the concept of "Holy Fool" in many traditions.

Cowan - a non-Witch. Formerly used in a very derogatory manner. Still used in Masonic Ritual to indicate the non initiate and/or pretender to "real craft".

Cross Quarter Days- The modern name for the Celtic Fire Festivals of Samhain, Imbolc, Beltane, and Lammas.

Crystallomancy - Divination by crystals, usually a crystal ball.

Crocodile God - The crocodile-headed God Sebek, was a God of Water, associated with the Nile.

Crossing the Bridge - Funeral Service for Wiccan.

Crow - is one of the animals humans have always been afraid of. A crow at the window is said to represent the soul of a dead person.

Croning - A Ceremony held to mark a woman's transition from Mother to Crone, the final phase of a woman's life

Cupid - Roman God of Love.

Cyhiraeth - Celtic Goddess of streams.


D

Daphnomancy - The act of diving the future with the aid of laurel leaves. The leaves are burned, usually during a full moon, and the action of the smoke will help you to see.

Daisy - Flower that represents the feminine and Water, Magical uses: Decorate the house with daisies at Midsummer's Eve to bring happiness to the home and to obtain the blessings of faeries. Daisies are also worn at Midsummer for luck and blessings. In the old times, young maidens would weave and wear daisy chains in their hair to attract their beloved.

Danburite Stone - Intellectual stone.

Decoction - Method of extraction in preparing herbs for use in Magick using boiling water.

Dedicate - To promise to follow the faith of Wiccan. Best time to do is between a New Moon and Full Moon.

Deosil - another word for "clockwise". Used in techniques for positive energies.

Devil's Paintbrush - Wild flower red/orange in color with potent attributes of those colors.

Dewi - Welsh Celtic God of dragons.

Diamond - Use sparingly, Solidifying

Diana - Roman Goddess of fertility, hunting, and the Moon.

Diana's Bow - The phase of the Moon when it is just a sliver of the New Moon Phase. Best time for Magick to ask for Blessing on new projects, a new home, etc. This can be done by anyone who wishes to imbue themselves with Goddess Energy.

Diana's Wicca - Goddess-centered feminist Wiccan practices.

Dionysus - Greek God of wine, agriculture, and fertility of nature.

Don - Welsh Celtic Goddess of the heavens, air, sea, control of the elements, andthe moon. Ruler of the underworld.

Dracomancer - A practitioner of magick who uses dragons in their workings.

Drake - A dragon, generally refers to a young one.

Drawing Down the Moon - To invoke the Goddess within the Coven and channel her power for everyone's benefit.

Drawing Down the Sun - Used to draw down the powers of the sun into a male witch. Very powerful on the Equinoxes and Solstices.

Druantia - Celtic Goddess, Queen of the Druids. Protector of trees, protection, knowledge, creativity, passion, sex, fertility, and growth.

Druids - were polytheists, but also edified elements of nature, such as the sun, the moon, and the stars, looking to them for "signs and seasons". Fire was regarded as a symbol of divinity and was associated with the sun, therefore their two main religious festivals had to do with fire, and occurred near solar events, however, governed by the lunar and vegetative cycle.

Dharma - The basic principles of cosmic or individual existence.

Dowsing - (Water Witching, Divining, Questing, Doodlebuging ... ) is the ancient art of finding water, minerals and other objects that seem to have a natural magnetic, electromagnetic or other perhaps unknown energy.

Dressing - Preparing a candle with herbs, oils, inscribing words or runes.

Duat - Egyptian land of the dead. It lies under the earth and is entered through the western horizon.

Dumb Supper - A ritual to honor the dead and commune with them. A table setting is placed for the dead. The meal is served in silence.

Dylan - Welsh Celtic God of the sea.

Dyad Moon - This June Moon marks the observance of balance. The God and the Goddess meet and become one; the Maiden becomes the Mother. This is the time of year when the day and the night become even, in equal balance. Duality becomes the focus. Also called Strong Sun Moon or Strawberry Moon.

Earth - One of the four elements - tied to body, nature and prosperity.

Eagle feathers - thought to be great energy bringers and remind us of the basic sacredness of all birds.

East Wind - represents changes, new beginnings, intellect and communication.

Eclectic Wicca - A personally defined practice of Wicca, taking from various traditions.

Eir - Norse Goddess of medicine.

Elaine - Welsh Celtic Maiden Goddess.

Elementals - Spirits associated with each of the four elements. Often represented by Gnomes (Earth), Sylphs (Air), Salamanders (Fire), and Undines (Water).

Elements - The four traditional components of Western Magick: Earth, Air, Fire and Water. All things are energetically composed of some mix of these four elements.

Elven Star - seven pointed star, is associated with practitioners of "Fairy" Wicca. See below.

Emerald Gem - Psychic Awareness, Future seeing.

Enneagram - a nine pointed star composed of three overlapping triangles. In esoteric kabbalistic doctrine, it represents the sphere of Yesod, the moon, dreams and illusions. See below:

Elder - a group of experienced individuals who oversee the operations of a Coven.

Esbat - A Moon Ritual celebrating the Goddess, held during a Full Moon. Also refers to a Coven meeting that is not on the Sabbath.

Equinox - happens two times each year (about March 21 & September 23) when the sun crosses the equator and day and night are everywhere of equal length.


F

Falcon/Hawk - The falcon/hawk is a symbol of power, light and royalty. Both Horus and Ra, the ruler gods, were hawk-headed.

Familiar - An Animal whose spirit wants to work with you.

Faunus - Roman God of prophecy.

Feri Tradition - (also Faery, Fairy, Faerie etc.) is an initiatory mystery tradition of Witchcraft. It is an ecstatic, rather than a fertility, tradition stemming from the teachings of Victor and Cora Anderson. Strong emphasis is placed on sensual experience and awareness, including sexual mysticism, which is not limited to heterosexual expression. In this, as in the general spirit of spiritual exploration, there is more risk-taking encouraged than in many Wiccan traditions which may have specific laws limiting behavior, and there is a certain amorality historically associated with the Tradition. Among the distinguishing features of the Faery tradition is the use of a specific Faery Power or energetic current which characterizes the lineage. Feri witches often see themselves as "fey": not black, not white, outside social definitions, on the road to Faeryland, either mad or poetical. Edgewalkers. They know that much of reality is unseen, or at least has uncertain boundaries.

Free Will - Within the confines of a material Universe our spirits have Free Will. That is why magick can influence our lives.

Fire - One of the four elements. Associated with power, passion and relationships.

First Fruits - Offering of first produce from the harvest to appropriate gods.

Fivefold Kiss, Fivefold Salute- The Witches' ritual salute, with kisses to the five areas on the body; (1) on each foot, (2) on each knee, (3) above the pubic hair, (4) on each breast, and (5) on the lips- really 8 kisses in all. It is only used within the Circle, but the words that go with it are the origin of "Blessed Be."

"Blessed be thy feet, that have brought thee in these ways."
"Blessed be thy knees, that shall kneel at the sacred altar."
"Blessed be thy womb, without which we would not be."
"Blessed be thy breasts, formed in beauty."
"Blessed be thy lips, that shall utter the sacred names."

Five-Fold Bond - A ritual tie that links wrists, neck and ankles.

Flora - Roman Goddess of flowers.

Forseti - Norse God of justice.

Frey - Roman God of fertility.

Freyja - Norse goddess of prosperity, fertility, and marriage.

Frigg - Norse Mother Goddess.

Fulla - Norse Goddess of fertility and virginity.

Full Moon - The most powerful Lunar Phase for working Magick. The energy of the Full Moon can be harnessed for three days before and after the date of a Full Moon.

Flourite rock - Clears understanding, aids in centering, astral aid.

Flying Ointment - A paste, usually containing herbs, that is applied to the skin to aid in astral projection.

Garnet Stone - Heightens sexual awareness, bodily strength, and wisdom.

Game of Benevento - Italian Tradition of flying with Diana.

Gardenerian Wicca - Wiccan tradition of Gerald Gardner and his High Priestess Doreen Valiente. Both are thought to be the founders of modern Wicca.

Geb - Eqyptian God of the Earth, under Nut.

Gefjon - Norse Goddess of the sea and fertility.

Georgian Wicca - Wicca tradition founded by George Patterson in California in 1970.

Geomancy - Divination by the earth.

Giobhniu - Celtic God of weaponry.

Gna - Norse messanger and traveller Goddess.

Greenman - Generally the God of the Forest.

Green Witch - Witch that prefers to do their rites outdoors in woods or meadows.

Great Rite - The Wiccan ritual honoring the ultimate magick of sex. It can be represented symbolically where the athame represents the male and the female is represented by the chalice. The rite which is the main feature of the third degree initiation, and which is also laid down for certain festivals. It is sexual in nature, but may be "actual'" (and private to the couples concerned ) or symbolic, as the participants wish.

Gray Magick - Magick that is done to help someone against their will.

Gold - Healing, Promotes Abundance, Wealth, The God, Safety and Power of the Male, Happiness, Playful Humor, and Promote Winning.

Gregorian Calendar - Standard Western calendar introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.

Green Color -Healing, Prosperity, Earth, Abundance, Fertility, Tree and Plant Magick, Growth, Monetary Success, Element of Earth, Personal Goals, and Healing.

Grimoire - A book of spells, charms, and facts on herbs, oils and crystals. A magick book.

Grounding - The vital act of connecting your energy with Earth's energy. Many wiccans use a tree as a symbol of grounding.

Guardians - the creatures or angels that protect the four corners (the four elements).

Gwydion - Welsh Celtic God of Warriors an magic.

Gwynn ap Nudd - Welsh Celtic God of the underworld.

Hades - Greek God and Ruler of the Underworld.

Handfasting - The Wiccan word for marriage.

Hand of Right - Something that is hand written. Many spells must be hand written to be affective.

Handparting - A formal handparting, for which the original handfasting cords are untied, cut, and burned. Ritual Divorce.

Haruspicy - Divination by animal entrails.

Hare Moon - This Moon marks the observance of Fertility. This is the Moon closest to Beltane. Also called Corn Planting Moon or Flower Moon.

Hathor - Peaceful Egyptian Goddess of child birth

Hedge Wizard - A rural practitioner who has little formal training, or none at all.

Heimall - Norse watchman God and Dog of light.

Helios - Greek God of the Sun.

Hermod - Norse God of bravery.

Hematite (iron) - Excellent grounding stone, Protection, soothing.

Heliotrope - A purple flower with a lovely scent that always faces the sun.

Hephaestus - Greek God of smiths and fire.

Heptagram - A seven-pointed star drawn with one unbroken line. Symbolic of the number seven, which is important not only to the seven traditional astrological planets but also to the seven planes and subplanes and the seven chakras.

Hieron - Idea one of the five elements "a divine thing", sometimes referred to as spirit.

Hierophant - A priest of the mysteries who reveals his secrets only to his initiates.

Hera - Great Queen of Mount Olympus. Goddess of marriage and birth.

Hermes - Greek God of riches, trade, and luck.

Hestia - Greek Goddess of hearthfire and domestic life

Heket - Egyptian Word for frog, a symbol of generation, rebirth and fertility.

Hex - A spell, usually negative; the evil eye; a curse.

Hlin - Norse Goddess of consolation and protection.

Hidden Children - Wiccans, who must often keep their religion secret, are the Hidden Children of the Goddess.

High Priestess (High Priest) - Head of a Coven who organizes and leads the ritual work.

Hived - A coven that has branched off of a previous coven is said to have "hived off" the original coven.

Honorian Script - another name for Theban script or the witches' alphabet.

Hoenir - Norse God of silence and light.

Horus - Egyptian God, Son of Isis and Osiris.

Horn God - represents the masculine polarity of the universe. The horned god is the archetypal horned Shaman, related to the ancient Gods of vegetation and the hunt: Greek Pan, the Celtic Cernunnos, and the Egyptian Ammon. Symbols of Horned God below.

I Ching; The Book of Changes - Chinese system of divination that uses yarrow stalks or coins.

Incense - Material burned to scent the air for creating a premium environment for magick.

Idun - Norse Goddess of youth.

Infusion - A method of extracting special substances in herbs for use in magick using water - but not by boiling.

Intuition - wisdom based on insight or perception.

Invocation - Spoken word to ask a spirit into a magick circle and asking for assistance.

Imbolc - olde Celtic name for Candlemas. 2nd of February. The time when the first signs of life are seen returning to the land and the Goddess changes her robes of Crone for those of Maiden.

Incubus (pl. incubi) - A malevolent male entity that takes sexual possession of sleeping women.

Iron Pentacle - is made up of sex, pride, self, power, and passion.

Ishtar - the goddess Ishtar was related to the planet Venus. As the most prominent female deity in the late Babylonian pantheon, she was equated by the Greeks with either Hera (Latin Juno) or Aphrodite (Latin Venus).

Isis - Popular mother Goddess in Egyptian Relgion.

Jackal/Wolf God - The jackal and wolf headed deities are a very common feature throughout Egyptian history, and are usually associated with the underworld and war. Anubis is the best known of the jackal-headed deities, and is certainly one of the oldest archetypes in the Egyptian culture - there are cave carvings from c. 30,000 BC of fertility scenes showing a copulating couple, with the man wearing a jackal head and tail.

Lammas - August 1st. Witch Festival. The Old Celtic name for this festival is Lughnassadh. It is the Festival of the First Fruits, and is the first of the 3 harvests. This festival also marks the change of the Threefold Goddess energies from that of Mother to Crone.

Lamen - A disc of metal with magickal symbols inscribed on it, worn around the neck during rituals.

Lares - Roman God of household and estate.

Law of Three - Whatever you do will return to you threefold.

Left Handed Whelks - Shells used for making dramatic, positive changes in your life.

Leopard Jasper - A good grounding stone, opens to new thinking.

Libation - A liquid offering to a god or goddess, such as wine or milk. Libations are usually poured out upon the Earth, but may be poured into a fire or offered in another way.

Libintia - Roman Goddess of funerals.

Limpets - Shells used in spells for courage, confidence, physical strength.

Litha - about 21 June. The Summer Solstice. Here the Sun is at the peak of its power; from this time onwards the days gradually grow shorter again.

Lofn - Norse Goddess of permission and marriage.

Long Nights Moon - December Moon. This is the moon that is closest to Winter Solstice. This Moon observes the time of year when Winter declined and people began to look toward Spring. Also called Snow Moon or Oak Moon.

Lord - The God, Male force in the Universe. The Lord's three life phases are Royal Prince, King, and Elder.

Lunar Calendar - Calendar based on 13 lunar months. Each is 29.5 days long.

Lugh - Celtic God of druids, carpentry, and mason.

Lughnassadh - (pronounced "LOO-nahs-ah") or Lammas, or Lughnassad , is one of the Greater Wiccan Sabbats and is usually celebrated on August 1st or 2nd, although occasionally on July 31st. The Celtic festival held in honor of the Sun God Lugh (pronounced "Loo") is traditionally held on August 7th. Some Pagans celebrate this holiday on the first Full Moon in Leo.


M

Mabon - about 21 September. The Autumn Equinox, once more a time of balance when day and night are equal. The feast of the height of the harvest.

Maeve - Celtic Goddess of Earth, fertility, and war.

Maia - Roman Goddess of growth and increase.

Maiden - An appointment held by one of the women of the coven. She is virtually the assistant High Priestess. This term is also the descriptive term used to describe the first of the aspects of the Threefold Goddess Energies (Maiden, Mother, and Crone). It is traditionally associated with the Waxing Moon, and the period from Imbolc (Candlemas) to Beltane (May eve) where the energies are those of initiating, beginning, and creation. Mage - A master magician; often a mage is a scholarly and skilled practitioner who prefers that the only tools of their magick be their mind, ability, and spirit.

Manannan - Celtic God of sailors and merchants.

Ma’at - Egyptian Goddess of Justice, and the symbolic name of justice aand refers to being in balance.

Mead Moon - Moon in July. The Mead Moon is the time of the observance of the making of the mead, the sweet wines, or even honey and herb tea. Sometimes called the Thunder Moon.

Menarche Rituals - Wiccan ceremony to welcome a girl who has had her first menstrual flow and is now a woman (Rite of Passage). Ceremony can involve many symbolic acts to portray the world of fertility and sexuality: Ceremonial bath, wearing of red, revealing aspects of the goddess, etc.

Menhir - A huge stone erected by early peoples for religious, spiritual, or magickal reasons.

Mercury - Roman messanger god and commerce God.

Myrrdin - Welsh Celtic God of druids, magic, and sorcery. Also known as Merlin.

Merry Meet - Greeting at the beginning of a Coven or ritual. Means to always meet in happiness.

Megalith - A huge stone monument or structure. Stonehenge is the best-known megalith.

Merry Part - A Greeting. To always part company with a feeling of happiness after a Coven or Ritual.

Mider - Celtic God of the underworld.

Minerva - Roman Goddess of wisdom, arts, and trade.

Mithras - Roman God of sun and light.

Mojo Bag - A small bag generally worn around the neck which is charged with energies towards a certain goal and filled with charms, herbs, and/or stones.

Moldavite rock - Usually finds Healers, cosmic and astral connections

Necromancy - Divination via the Spirits of the Dead.

NeoPaganism - A way of life, or a spirituality, who's movement began during the 20th Century, and whose rituals are usually based on Pagan practices.

Nemain - Celtic Goddess of panic and war.

Neptune - Roman God of the Sea.

Nephthys - Egyptian Goddess, Dark and mysterious, sister to Isis.

Oak Tree - In parts of ancient Greece, people use to approach the oak as an oracle and ask it questions about fate and future. The acorn morphologically resembles the tip of a penis with cupped foreskin. At the Greek oracle of Dodoni, the god Zeus speaks by rustling the leaves of the sacred oak.

OBE - Out-of-body experience.

Obsidian Stone - Protection, Inner hidden issues.

Odin - Supreme Norse diety.

Ogham - Celtic equivalent of Teutonic runes. The ancient alphabet of the Celtic people.

Pantheism - Basically a belief that all gods are part of one greater encompassing Deity.

Pantheon - A group of Gods and Goddesses in a particular religious or mythical structure.

Pagandom - Part of the world inhabited primarily by pagans.

Paganing - Presentation of an infant child to the Circle and to the Gods.

Pales - Roman Goddess of flocks and shepards.

Pallomancy - Divination with a pendulum.

Passion Over Ritual - Ritual observed when a loved one has died.

Pearl - Intuition, Divination aid.

Pearl Pentacle - is made up of love, law, knowledge, liberty, and wisdom.

Peacock Feathers - thought to be very unlucky, because they resemble an eye, or the "evil eye."

Proserpine - Roman goddess of the underworld.

Pentacle - A five pointed star within a circle thought to represent the five elements, among other things.

Planetary Hours - a system of hourly division associated with Planetary Energies.

Pluto - Roman God on the underworld.

Polytheism - Basically a belief that all gods are separate beings. To believe in more than one god or goddess.

Pomona- Roman Goddess of fruit trees and fruit.

Poppets - is similar to a luck charm only much more powerful. Not All Witch Poppets are used for cursing. Poppets can be used to promote health, healing, love, and happiness, to protect loved ones from harm, and to charm friends and enemies alike. Most of the time a poppet is shaped like a human and made out of wax, wood, cloth, paper, root, or clay. Often the poppet would be stuffed with herbs, blood, fingernails, hair, & urine. A ritual or spell would charge the poppet with a purpose.

Postulant or Neophyte - A new member of a Coven, someone who has not yet been initiated.

Poseidon - Greek God of the Sea.

Polarity - The concept of equal, but opposite energies. The Eastern Yin Yang is a perfect example. Yin is cold; Yang is hot. Other examples: Goddess/God, night/day, Moon/Sun, birth/death, dark/light, psychic mind/unconscious mind. Universal balance.

Psychopomp - A God or Goddess who guides Souls to the Underworld or Afterlife.

Psionics - The use of psychic powers to affect or manipulate the physical world.

Purple Color - symbolizes Spirituality and Psychism, Psychic Ability, Third Eye, Spiritual Power, Hidden Knowledge, Self Assurance, and Symbolizes the Devine

Ra - Egyptian God of the sun and creation.

Ravens - Large black birds, Ravens were always birds of omen and unusual intelligence. Ravens can serve witches, feathers can bestow powerful magick. They can give the added courage needed to take new steps, and can symbolize an impending change in consciousness. Ravens are also associated with magick and healing. Crows average around 17 inches long, and ravens about 24-27. A raven weighs about four times that of a crow.

Receptive Hand - The hand which has less power, generally whichever hand you do not write with. This hand is used less in holding and charging ritual items, however, it receives outside energy which is used to feed the magick.

Red Jasper stone - Aids in remembering dreams, justice.

Reincarnation - a belief system that one's soul lives and is reborn over and over.

Rhodonite stone - Draws love, heals emotions

Right-hand Path - A term used for a person who practices magick that is beneficial to others. Opposite of left-hand path.

Rivers - source of elemental water and spiritual powers of water spirits. Rivers such as the Nile, Thames, Amazon will have unique attributes for magick.

Rock Crystal - Direct contact with spirit world, Centering

Ruby - To bring about a very deep and pure love affair.

Runes - a set of symbols that are used for Divination and Magickal purposes. Runes from different origins have different symbols and meanings. Wiccans have been known to make there own personal rune symbols or alphabets.

Saga - Norse Goddess of history.

Salt - Symbol of Earth.

Salamander - an entity that dwells in the realm of Fire.

Samsara - The continuous cycle of life, death and rebirth.

Samhain - 31 October. The most important festival, marking the beginning and end of the year, the beginning of the resting season of the land and a time of remembrance of those who have gone before. A feast of the Goddess as Crone and Wise One.

Sand Dollars - use in Wisdom Spells.

Sands of Time - Sand taken from between the paws of the Great Sphinx in Egypt, used to make spells and charms permanent.

Sappho - Lyric Poet from Lesbos, one of the Earthly Nine Muses. Live 600BC.

Sapphire stone - Protection, luck, peace of mind.

Saturn - Roman God of seeds and harvest.

Scallops shells - Useful for spells involving travel and movement.

Seax-Wica - Wicca based on Saxon traditions and magick. Honors the gods Woden and Freyja.

Seal of Solomon - The seal of Solomon is depicted by two triangles. One right side up, and one inverted on top of it. It is often called the Star of David. It is used in Quaballistic and Ceremonial Magick.

Seed Moon - Full Moon in April. This Moon marks the observance of the Magick of all gardens and the practitioners that keep them. We acknowledge the connection between gardening and magick deliberately by creating sacred space dedicated to the Craft. Also called Sprouting Grass Moon, Wind Moon, and Pink Moon.

Selenite stone - Astral aid, ease thoughts and emotions.

Seth - A hostile Egyptian God often associated today with Satan. Also known as Set.

Shade - The spirit of a being which refuses to leave the physical plane.

Shrine - a sacred place that holds a collection of objects symbolizing a Deity.

Sigil - a magicakally oriented Seal, Sign, or Glyph that us used in magickal Workings or Rituals.

Sjofn - Norse Goddess of matchmaking and love.

Silver - Telepathy, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience, Intuition, Dreams, Astral Energies, The Goddess, and Communication.

Smokey Quartz - A need for invisibility, ridding of unwanted elements.

Snowflake Obsidian - Brings peace and inner calm, aids in recognizing patterns of behavior.

Snotra - Norse Goddess of virtue and self- discipline.

Sodalite stone - Self-esteem, absorbs negativity

Summoner - Like a male version of the maiden, a member of the coven who is an assistant to the High Priest.

South Wind - represents fire, passon, initiative and strength.

So Mote it Be - Similar to phase of Amen used by Christians. To be said at end of prayer or spell. A Wiccan way of saying "So let it be."

Summerland - Pagan "heaven"; a place after death. After you die, you are brought to the Summerland which is kinda like the Wiccan equivelant of Heaven, but since we have no devil, we have no Hell. The Summerland is where the spirits that presently do not have an earthly body wait for the right time to return to Earth. It is known by many names and is often referred to as the Land of Eternal Summer and seen as a gorgeous, lush green field, with beauty and trees all around you.

Sympathetic Magick - Magick done by acting out the situation to your desired result, thereby encouraging reality to do the same.

Scrying - a divination method that uses tools such as a crystal ball, mirror, etc. While scrying, the Seer is able to "see" images or gain information about a specific person, place, or object.

Skyclad - Ritual nudity. Some Wiccan Traditions insist on skyclad worship.

Spiral - a spiral symbol represents the "coming into being".

Stang - Ritual tool from Pagan Rome which resembles a two-pronged trident. Often used in place of the wand or circle.

Sylph - an "entity" or "elemental" that dwells in the plane or is associated with the AIR Element


T

Tasseography - Divination by reading tea leaves.

Tameran Wicca - Based on Egyptian Gods.

Tiger's Eye Gemstone- Strength, Independence, Business start-ups.

Third Eye - The psychic eye, not physically visible, but mental. Located in the middle of the forehead.

Thor - Norse God of thunder, lightning, and streangth.

Totem Animal - A spirit guide in the form of an animal who chooses to accompany you. This tradition is derived from Native American spirituality.

Ululation - The part of an incantation or chant which demands full vocal force and volume.

Ull - Norse God of archery.

Uncasting - Opening the circle at the end of a ritual.

Underworld - The realm of the spirit; realm of the dead.

Undine - an "entity" or "elemental" that dwells in the plane of Water or is associated with the Water Element.

Unicorn - A magickal horned horse.

Unmanifest - The unknown source of existence, it is said that magicians take their power from the unmanifest to use it within the manifest.

Vali - Norse God of the battlefield.

Var - Norse Goddess of promises and vows.

Veil of Unknowing - The boundary between the manifest and the unmanifest.

Venus - Roman goddess of beauty and love. Planet.

Vertumnus - Roman god of seasons.

Vesta - Roman Goddess of the hearth.

Vidar - Norse God of independance, solitude, and freedom.

Virtues - Magickal properties of objects like herbs, stones, and creatures as was assigned to them during their divine creation.

Visualization - To see something clearly in your mind.

Vor - Norse Goddess of self-discipline and faith.

Vulcan - Roman God of Fire.

Wand - A tool in magick which resembles a rod and is used to direct energy towards a goal.

Waning - The lunar phase when the moon is getting "smaller" (more crescent-like). This is the time when magick that involves banishing things, breaking habits, and getting rid of things is to be performed. Opposite of waxing.

Ward - A protection spell.

Warlock - Not a Witch. An Oathbreaker.

Watchtowers - A concept derived from ceremonial magick; the four watchtowers each represent a cardinal direction, element, elemental, and a color. They are commonly used in modern Wicca.

Waxing - The lunar phase when the moon is getting "larger" (nearing the full moon). This is the time when magick that involves growth and bringing things to you is best performed. Opposite of waning.

West Wind - represent power of cleansing, purifying, love and gentleness.

Wiccaning - (or Paganing) is a time to dedicate your child to the God and Goddess and also to name him or her. Wiccans call it Wiccaning, Pagans call it Paganing. It is also known as Witching. It is very similar to Baptizing.

Wortcunning - The knowledge and use of the secret healing and magickal properties of herbs; a word used by folk healers, Witches, and Wiccans of all traditions to mean the practice of herbalism. Wortcunning has been associated with the Old Religion since ancient times.

Wheel of the Year - The turning of the Seasons, the Cycle of the Year and Seasons.

White Color - symbolizes Innocence, Manifestation, General Purposes, Spirituality, Goddess, Peace, Higher Self, Purity, Protection, All Purposes, and

Symbolizes the Moon.

White Magick - Magick that is for good.

Wicca - A Neopagan spirituality that emphasizes spiritual balance and the concept of "Harm None".

Widdershins - Not Sunwise; counterclockwise.

Witch Queen - A Priestess who has hived off (or help start) three or more Covens.

Wita - Scottish Wicca.

Witchcraft - The Art of practicing Earth-based magick, and sometimes a Pagan spirituality. Not a religion of Evil.

Witch's Bottle - A sealed bottle placed in the house or buried on the property for protection. There are many ways to make a witch's bottle. Some witches use the detritus of the year: broken pottery, rusted nails, junk mail, etc. Witches sometimes add something personal like their hair, nail clippings, urine, or a bloody cloth. This sort of bottle is always buried, usually at Samhain (for the new year). Another type is a bottle filled with salt and sugar, and/or herbs for blessings like protection, happiness, prosperity, and charms to avert specific threats. This type of bottle is secreted somewhere in the home.

Witch's Ladder - A string of forty beads, or a cord with forty knots, used (like a rosary) as an aid to concentrated repetition without the need of actual counting.

Witches' Pyramid - a Creed of learning that Witches follow: "To Know, To Dare, To Will, and To Be Silent".

Witta - Irish Wicca.

Word of Power - A word or name which is supposed to have great power when spoken, most are almost impossible to pronounce and have no meaning in any language.

Woden - Saxon version of Oden, Chief God.

Wolf Moon - full moon in January. This Moon marks the time of year when the wolves were driven by hunger of the Winter. The wolves would come closer to the village now more then any other time of year. The family often sat about the home fires and listened to the haunting calls of the wolves.

Worm Moon - full moon in March or April. This Moon marks the celebration of Spring. It is the observance of the return of the Goddess in her Maiden form. At this time we prepare for planting. Sometimes called the Sap Moon.

Wort Moon - August moon. This Moon marks the gathering of the Magickal herbs. "Wort" in Anglo-Saxon means, "herb." Offer the first fruits. Sometimes call the Corn Moon.

Xiphos - Sword used by Ancient Greeks for battle and ceremony.


Y

Yellow - Color of Success and Happiness, Symbol of The Sun, Intelligence, Memory, Breaking Mental Blocks, Accelerated Learning, and Logical Imagination.

YIN/YANG - The twin poles of energy. The yin/yang concept if one system of viewing the universal energies. Yin corresponds to Receptive Energy and yang to Projective Energy.

Yule - The Winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year, Yule is when the Goddess gives birth to the God. This is also the Norse New Year.

Yoni - The female genitalia as a sacred symbol of life, creation, fertility, sexuality, the Goddess.


Z

Zenith - The zenith is the highest point or state reached and is a term used in witchcraft to describe the elation experienced after a successful ritual has been cast.

Zeus - Ruler of all the Greek gods. God of the light and the sky.
